It Doesn’t Matter How Good It Looks? – February 2012
A while back I met with a business owner, a handsome and well dressed fellow behind a Parnian desk (Google it). This thing cost more than most people make in a month and was just stunning. When addressing his printed materials for his business (a professional firm) he says to me, and I quote, “It doesn’t matter how good it looks”. As a designer, I was taken aback that brochures, business cards, important forms and documents were not worthy of the labor of time and creativity. Looking around I found what did matter to him as to “how good it looked”. His hair was meticulously trimmed, he obviously worked out, I already mentioned his desk which was AMAZING. The office was well kept, organized and someone (probably a women) had given some time and thought to the design and decoration of the place. He said my rates were too high and that he could find anyone to do what I could offer him at a fraction of the price. Oh well, next!
I realized long ago that not everything matters to everyone. Some people do not care if there hair is perfect, but have a car with three coats of wax on it. Some people (mostly men) never trim their nose hair, but edge the driveway using a ruler. Some people think just because they have MS Word, they can design print materials. The reason I have made a living doing what I do for so long is because of two simple things. One, I find people that believe looking good in type and graphics is important and it matters. And two, because I am better at it than most people with MS Word.:-)
